08/14/2008 - Temporary Museum of Modern Marx
Mehler Texnologies is supporting this unique piece of art in Chemnitz. Enveloped in a cube made out of VALMEX® easy MESH the monumental sculpture of Marx's head by Russian sculptor Lev Kerbel is turned here into the only object in a temporary museum.
The Temporary Museum of Modern Marx is a project being run by students from the Linz University of Art and the Schneeberg Applied Arts Academy in collaboration with the New Gallery of Saxony. The museum's idea has two aims. Firstly, the enclosed space directs the focus onto the sculpture and onto the sense in which this sculpted portrait is an object of identification for the City of Chemnitz. Secondly, the temporary museum highlights the poor architectural state of the inner city area by taking away the only item of any worth.

The interior of the Temporary Museum of Modern Marx enables visitors to get closer to the Marx head via stairs and platforms. At a height of six metres visitors lose the familiar view from below and stand eye to eye with the philosopher's image in a way that was never previously possible in this location. After a couple of floors, those climbing further up come back out into the open and can look out over the city from an unusual perspective
The temporary museum's structure consists of a steel and aluminium scaffold construction that is covered inside and out with VALMEX® easy Mesh. The sides of the inner shell are vertical and enclose the monument completely. Every axis of the outer shell slopes at 5 . It reaches a height of 17 metres, a width of 12 metres and a depth of 30 metres. Around 10,000 m of steel tubing and 2,500 m2 of fabric went into the scaffold's construction, which is weighed down with around 110 tons of ballast as a safeguard against storms
The museum is open daily from 11am to 8pm until 31st August. More details available at www.marxmonument.de
